ADVENT STATION 4:

The Destiny of Bethlehem

Old Testament Reading: Ruth 4:10-13

“I ALSO TAKE RUTH the Moabite, the widow of Mahlon, as my wife, in order to raise up a family for her late husband on his estate, so that the name of the departed may not perish among his kinsmen and fellow citizens. Do you witness this today?” All those at the gate, including the elders, said, “We do so. May the LORD make this wife come into your house like Rachel and Leah, who between them built up the house of Israel. May you do well in Ephrathah and win fame in Bethlehem. With the offspring the Lord will give you from this girl, may your house become like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah.” Boaz took Ruth. When they came together as man and wife, the Lord enabled her to conceive and she bore a son.

Meditation

Small towns tend to be places where not much happens. Commerce, the latest entertainments, exciting people and events, the decisions that shape history—these happen in bigger cities and important centers. But God is not limited to working with what is already deemed important in the world; the Lord is not a slave to significant people and places as he achieves his plan. In fact, God’s plan bestows significance, his love creates importance. And God orders all things mightily and sweetly for the sake of our salvation. Already, centuries before Christ, the Lord was preparing the small town of Bethlehem to host the greatest event the world has ever known. Ruth, initially excluded from Bethlehem, is welcomed in. We, once excluded from heaven by sin, now have a home with the Savior. In the fourth Advent station we glorify God because he has overcome our littleness and our alienation from him to make us great through the Incarnation of his Son.

New Testament Reading: Mathew 2:1-6

WHEN JESUS WAS BORN in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet: ‘And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel.’”

Prayer

All-loving Father, just as you made Ruth to be an ancestor of Christ, you desire to draw all people into your fold; you desire that all participate in your infinite happiness. You overcome our sins and our distance from you by the greatness of your love. Give us the holy confidence that comes from knowing that you love us not because we are good, but because you are good. May all our thoughts, words, and actions bring Christ homage so that he may truly reign in our hearts. And may we always remember that your grace is enough. We ask this through Christ the Savior of all. Amen.

O come, thou Key of David, come And open wide our heavenly home; Make safe the way that leads to thee And close the path to misery. Rejoice, rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
